De choreografie ligt in handen van de Russische, naar het Westen uitgeweken sterballerina Natalia Makarova. Ze baseerde haar versie van het ballet op de originele choreografie van Marius Petipa, die onder andere choreograaf was van De Notenkraker en The Sleeping Beauty, uit 1877. Indiase dans en kleding vind ik er vaak zo mooi uitzien. Leuk dat er van een Indiaas verhaal ooit een ballet is gemaakt. Het ballet La Bayadère wat zich in India afspeelt, wordt nu eindelijk compleet door Het Nationale Ballet opgevoerd. Het verhaal gaat over de liefde tussen de Indiase tempeldanseres Nikiya en de krijger Solor en weet al 130 jaar het publiek te raken. Hoewel de tweede akte, The Kingdom of the Shades, al 45 jaar op het repertoire van Het Nationale Ballet staat, is het ballet nog nooit volledig uitgevoerd. Vanaf nu dus niet meer, want vanaf 15 februari is het hele ballet te bewonderen in het Muziektheater in Amsterdam.
